Some things to consider in printing flat sheets

Size

Flat sheets are generally 8.5 x 11 in size. This is the most standard size of paper and the most economical to print. This size works best as inserts for presentation folders and 3-ring binders. Larger flat sheets (11 x 17, for example) work well as attention-getters on bulletin boards or announcement kiosks. Smaller flat sheets (8.5 x 5.5) make nice handouts for trade shows or other events.

Color

Most flat sheets are printed in color. Color grabs attention and leaves a lasting impression. The endless possibilities of good color combinations cannot be overstated.

Sides

Flat sheets can be printed in full-color on both the front and back of the page, or in color on the front with black-and-white on the back, or, the back can be left blank. Your choice here depends on where and how you intend to use your flat sheets.

Paper

Flat sheets work well on just about any type and weight of paper. If you plan to post the sheets on community announcement boards or to hand them out at a trade show, you’ll want to go with a heavier, more durable paper and possibly a high gloss finish. If your flat sheets are going into a folder or binder, a lighter-weight paper will work well.

Other

Talk with your printer about other considerations, including 3-hole drilling, coating, bleeds (printing to the very edge of the page as opposed to leaving some margin), perforations and more.

A Page by Any Other Name …

You may know them by a variety of names: flyers, sell sheets, data sheets, product sheets, promo sheets, product pages, sales literature. All these names describe that most basic, yet effective and often overlooked marketing tool – a piece of paper that printers call a flat sheet.

A flat sheet is just that -- a printed piece that stays flat, as opposed to scored or folded. You print valuable company information on a page, leave the page flat for all to see, and voila, you’ve got a flat sheet.

Flat sheets have more uses than baking soda.

• Use them as stuffers in your next mailing.

• Include them in presentation folders or media kits.

• Insert them in your company newsletter or catalog.

• Hand them out to customers as they enter your store.

• Take a few thousand along to a trade show.

• Have three holes drilled along the left side and insert them into ring binders.

• Place a stack in a high-traffic area where people can pick them up and take them home.

• Post them on public bulletin boards and announcement boards – it’s like getting free billboard advertising at eye level all over town.

Flat sheets are best used to highlight one thought or product. Use them to announce something new or exciting in a general way – then put all the details into a press release.

Flat sheets are simply attention-getters. Make them bright, make them splashy, or make them cool and subdued, then place them strategically and let them do the talking for you.
